Advantages and Disadvantages of Web 2.0 in education
As I have been using more and more of the Web 2.0
technologies in this class I have realized that not all of them are education
friendly. Here is rural Hunt County you are lucky if your school has computers
that are less than 5 years old and many of the Web 2.0 technologies require
newer operating systems and updated players and drivers to work properly. I
have made a list of what I perceive as the advantages and disadvantages of the
Web 2.0 technologies.
Advantages
· Flexibility
for teachers to choose the technology that works best in their classroom.
· Easier and
faster access to information, wherever and whenever it is needed.
· Students
share experiences and resources.
· Compatibility
with various elements of education and existing content.
· The user is
in control of his or her personal data and information.
· Allows
students to collaborate and be actively involved in the content they are
learning.
Disadvantages
· Internet
connection is needed
· Teachers
spend too much time trying to teach the technology.
· Not meeting
the students learning needs.
· Lack of
proper equipment to support Web 2.0 technologies.
· Many Web
2.0 technologies are blocked by filters put in place by the school district.
· Students
using social media for class work might use more social in their online
interaction vs. Real intellectual sharing happening.

I love this activity! I set up my folders and added information specific for my interest. I am always finding something and then forgetting where I was at on the web when I found it. I have used Pinterest for a couple of years to keep my things in order, I collect and sell antiques and Pinterest has been a great web tool for the sources of reference for setting a selling price, I hope the social bookmarking will work as well for my educational technology information. My daughter is a special education teacher for the Plano school district and I have got her interested as a way to brainstorm with her fellow teachers. I just love it!
COPPA - I explored COPPA and the implications on education and it is a necessary tool for all educational facilities. “the law was intended primarily to ‘enhance parental involvement in a child’s online activities’ as a means of protecting the online privacy and safety of children.” but in 1998 the internet was so new and uncharted territory that age 13 seemed like a good age. Now in 2015 kids under age 2 have tablets and all sorts of electronic equipment in front of them, I think COPPA has exceeded its initial intended use. I found a great article that discusses this very topic. COPPA IN 2015 Enjoy!
